In this series of Diving Deeper into the 4Cs of a Diamond, we will be looking at an aspect of a diamond which is its Carat. What exactly is the carat of a diamond and why is it so important? Is a higher carat necessarily better? What do you need to look out for? Let’s find out below.
What is a Carat of a Diamond / Diamond Carat?
Contrary to what many people think, the ‘Carat’ of the diamond refers to the weight of the diamond and not its size. A common misunderstanding is that the carat of a diamond is determined by the size of the diamond. However, it is in fact determined by the weight of the diamond, with 200 mg, or 0.2g corresponding to 1 carat. This means that diamonds that are of the same carat need not be the exact same size.
Why is the Diamond Carat So Important?
The diamond carat is perhaps the least most important aspect when looking at a diamond as the brilliance and beauty of the diamond outweighs the carat weight. A mediocre diamond with a higher carat weight will not shine or sparkle as well as a higher quality diamond with lower carat weight.
Carat weight can appear differently among diamonds due to varying diamond shapes. The shape and cut of a diamond are what mostly defines the size of it. A diamond with higher carat weight can be smaller than a diamond with a lower carat weight. Again, it is important to note that a higher carat weight does not necessarily indicate the size of a diamond.
What should I Look Out for When Purchasing a Diamond?
It is good to be open-minded to having a varied or lower range for a diamond carat to ensure that you get good value for your money and not overpay too much. Consider what is most important for you or your partner but do remember that the overall aesthetic appeal of a diamond is determined significantly more by the other Cs instead of the carat. Higher carat weight does not always mean that it’s better.
