In this series of Diving Deeper into the 4Cs of a Diamond, we will be looking at the most important aspect of a diamond which is the quality of its Cut. What exactly is the cut of a diamond and why is it so important? What do you need to look out for? Let’s find out below.

What is a Cut of a Diamond or a Diamond Cut?

The ‘Cut’ refers to the qualities of a diamond which interacts with light, resulting in how well light can be reflected by the gem and how much the diamond sparkles. It is the most important aspect out of the 4Cs as it directly impacts the beauty and sparkle of the diamond. The cut is determined by several factors such as the diamond’s angles, symmetry, proportions, and finishing details.

Why is the Diamond Cut So Important?

The diamond cut is important as it directly affects the dull or sparkle of a diamond as mentioned earlier. If a diamond has a poor cut, it will appear dull even if it has other significant attributes such as higher carat weight and flawless clarity grade.

On the other hand, a well-cut diamond will reflect and refract light for maximum brightness and sparkle. As such, a diamond with a better cut but less carat weight will sparkle more and look more exquisite than a diamond with a poor cut but higher carat weight.

Diamond Cut Grades

The official GIA Diamond Cut Grade Chart is summarised as follows:

Excellent — Highest level of brilliance and sparkle

Very Good — Exceptional level of brilliance and similar sparkle to the Excellent Cut

Good — Decent level of brilliance and sparkle at a more affordable price

Fair — Little brilliance or sparkle

Poor — Brilliance or sparkle is close to none

To note: Other diamond cut grade charts include higher levels of diamond cuts such as Ideal or Triple Excellent.

What should I Look Out for When Purchasing a Diamond?

The Excellent Diamond Cut Grade may seem like the best option when looking for a diamond, but there is an important point to take note of to ensure that you do not make a wrong choice and overpay for a mediocre diamond.

Having the same cut grade does not mean that the diamonds are cut exactly the same. Even with the same grade on the chart, diamond cuts can vary significantly based on the diamond cutter and how it is cut. This will affect the optimal light reflection and sparkle of a diamond as the diamond may either be too deep or too shallow. 55% of diamonds sold online are Excellent Cut Grade and having said grade does not always mean that the diamond cut is an outstanding one. Do inspect the diamond carefully before making a purchase or seek a consultation with a diamond expert to make an informed decision.
